Reduce Clutter to Lower Stress
Have Trouble Throwing Out Paper?
I am not going to preach, because I am a known clutter bug! But recent medical studies to show that reducing clutter in a life can reduce stress, which also leads to better health. Our friends at Woman Work have just posted an article on paper clutter and what to keep and what to throw out. I know that papers overwhelm me at times, that and laundry, my pantry.. and so it goes.
Why Worry About Organization
This is important in the home because lost papers can cause stress, and they can also cost money. It is more important in an office environment when you boss may read a lot about you from the state of your desk. If you work at home, you might not have to please a boss, but you have the double whammy of getting personal paperwork getting mixed up with business documents.

Live Past 100 with Healthy Habits
Dr. Mao of Yahoo Health says that our bodies were designed to last until 100. He says that we just need to get our own bad habits out of the way. While I think his view may be a little optimistic in this present day, I also believe we should consider some of his tips for a healthier lifestyle that can add years to our life.
Doctor’s Long Life Health Tips
- Replace 3 larger meals a day with 5 smaller meals. Our culture is set up around 3 meals a day, but this is not hardwired into our genetic program. Actually, many people have 3 meals and 2 snacks, so maybe they are hearing their body requesting a more frequent, but lighter load, on their digestion and metabolism.
- Look for opportunities to exercise. Dr. Mao suggests taking the stairs, but I would also add a walk around a grocery store, raking the leaves instead of getting a lawn guy to do it, or even just attacking one room and cleaning it well will help. You’ll feel good about getting a task done, and your body will have benefited from activity without you having to visit the gym.
- Find reasons to be joyful. As a reward for raking the yard, take a couple hours to sit down with a funny movie or get togeether with friends to share funny stories. Laughter releases endorphins, and also laughter has been shown to release stress which also helps us live longer.
- Drink lots of water - Many long lived people, from around the world, share water as their secret to a long life. They have access to pure water, and they make sure they keep their bodies hydrated.
- Meditate - Again stress is an early ager and a killer. Find a comfortable chair, relax, and allow your mind to go blank for a few minutes. Every time thoughts pop into your head, slide them out again. Let your mind and your whole body to calm down.
I think these habits will help most of us lead happier and longer lives. Do you have any secret fountains of youth you would like to share?

Foods That Fight Fat
Well, I guess we did not need a doctor to TELL us this, but maybe we did need a doctor to remind us. If we stock our pantry with healthy foods, then we will tend to eat those healthy foods. Yahoo Health published an article called 127 foods that fight fat on just this subject. The author is a real doctor, Dr. Shaphiro, and he discusses which food to empasize in order to keep your pantry stuffed with healthy foods that you actually want to eat!
Soups: He calls soup a good calorie bargain, and I think its always great to keep some soup in the pantry. Even my kids will snack on soup rather than ice cream or other alternatives if it is available. A bowl of spicy chile or chunky chicken hits the spot on a cold day, and with some crackers, it makes a light meal or satisfying snack. Soup is also pretty economical compared to lots of just they could be stuffing their face with!
Fruit: Again this may be obvious, but it seems we keep forgetting it! Fruit tastes good, and it would really be hard to overeat it! Making sure that you always have a bunch of bananas or juicy apples around can stave off cravings for less healthy snacks.
Salad stuff: This seems to be the hardest thing, but why not make a really nice salad a few times a week, and keep the extras around like low fat croutons, imitation bacon bits (soy), and a good selection of low fat dressing. If the salad is made, easy to server, and really good, you will be happy to see your kids helping themselves to a serving instead of rooting through the holiday candy that you thought you hid in the back of a shelf.
Sweets: Candy! Yes! The good doctors tells us to go get the real thing, and it makes me remember that my MOM used to have the same advice. Real hard candy takes awhile to suck on, and so it’s a mouthful of sweet luxury without ruining the calorie budget for the day. If you family is used to getting their sweets from fruit, then the candy wll seem like a wonderful indulgence, and they won’t be tempted to overdo it. Go ahead and put out a bowl of hard candy peppermints or those little round butterscotch ones, and I’ll bet you’ll be pleased to see that they don’t vanish before your eyes.
My tip to get kids to eat green things. I keep a jar of alfredo sauce in the fridge, and I find that if I prepare the green stuff, and put a spoonful of alfredo sauce on it, it keeps 2 out of my 3 kids from making nasty faces. I figure that’s a good ratio!
Anyway, let me tell you again that these comments may seem obvious, but I tend to forget them! Remember!

Wrinkle Reduction without Needles or Surgery
Lose the Wrinkles Without Injections of Surgery
I can think of a million reasons to resist painful injections or invasive surgery. Did I say painful? Of course, these types of treatments that require a doctor’s care also cost a lot. Many of us just cannot justify spending the kid’s college fun on our vanity, can we?
What if you could simply apply a cream wrinkle reducer to your face that would relax wrinkles so you could see results in a few minutes? Does this sound to good to be true?

I was privileged enough to see the clinical research and try [Jeunesse]. I absolutely think it is great. I really back this product because everyone is not a candidate for plastic surgery or cosmetic injections. For some people, the price is prohibitive; they just won’t pay those prices. For many, surgery is just not an option. They simply wouldn’t do it. With Jeunesse, everyone is a candidate for immediate wrinkle reduction. For me, as a physician, it was very important that this product not be hype. I think the research really backs that up.”

Calendar Girls Seniors Do Semi-Nude Pics!
Seniors Go Semi-Nude for Charity
This is great! I picked this up from Senior Journal.
Senior Calendar Girls Go Semi-Nude! I hope this does not earn us an adult rating or anything, but it is too good to resist! These ladies are aged 75 and up to age 94, and I think they are great! It is all about having a positive self image at any age. They are doing it as a fundraiser for their hometown of Townsend, Mass. It may be a little surprising, but you have to love it on so many levels! Go Semi-Nude Seniors.
This picture is of 93 year old Millie Smith, and I think she is just beautiful!
Apparently they got the idea from the movie, Calendar Girls, which is about a group of older English women who made a semi-nude calendar for charity. Beyond raising money, I’ll bet they are raising self-esteem. Go for it, Grandma!
So, what do you think?

Look Younger Without Cosmetic Surgery
Even though we may tell everybody that we earned every gray hair, and that those little creases around our eyes are laugh lines, most of us would like to preserve a youthfull appearance. Surgery is out of the question, either because of the expense, or just the fact that it is elective surgery that we really don’t need.
Newsweek published an article with tips to look younger without surgery, and I think they are good ideas, even though they may just be common sense.
- Eye Exam - Stop the Over 40 Eye Squint
- New Bra - Really for women, as my aunt used to say, a bra is the most important piece of clothing you wear.
- Moisturizer with Sunscreen - At least prevent your face from travelling further downhill.
- Lift Weights - And ladies, this will not bulk you up! You will look younger when you are leaner.
- Smile - A big grin healps everything travel uphill!

Over 50 Diet and Calcium
What About Calcium Over 50?
We have read a lot about the mineral, calcium, to prevent bone loss. It is very interesting that Connie Weaver, aged 54, one of the world’s top experts on calcium does not take a calcium supplement herself! She says that she drinks plenty of milk every day, which she considers a tried and true method to keep enough calcium going through her system so she minimizes bone loss.
So milk is still good for you, but I picked out some alarming information from her interview:
Q: Is there a role for calcium in the body beyond bone strength?
If you don’t maintain calcium in your body, you’ll die. Calcium is needed in every life process: it’s needed for your nerves to act, your muscles to contract, your brain to function, for practically every activity in the body. Ninety-nine percent of the body’s calcium is in the skeleton, and only 1 percent, concentrated in your blood, is used for all of those vital functions I just mentioned.
Although it’s a small amount, the calcium in your blood must be maintained. So either you keep the blood replenished from your diet, or your body will take it from the big bank it has, the bones, because they are a lower priority.
Q: How many of us get enough calcium?
Over the age of about 11, people on average get only half of the calcium they need.
Now I, myself, have kids that mild does not agree with. She says that soy products and even fortified orange juice will do the trick though. I have been purchasing fortified orange juice since I cannot seem to get my own family excited about soy milk. I, myself, will drink soy milk or sneak it in recipes, so that works for me too!

Weight Control Tips and “Cheats”
Join the forum discussionHi all,
I posted my own weight control tip on the blog, and would like to hear any others!
Do you have any tips to help us keep our weight stable during holidays or all year around? I had done really well losing weight (after I’d let an extra 20 lbs slip on) since August, but am pretty stuck now. Any tips for breaking those nasty times when, despite your best efforts, you get stuck?
I know that my friends on weight watchers say that getting stuck is a sign that your body has decided to respond to what it thinks is starvation mode and has decided to respond by hanging on to every calorie. They actually say it is good to fool your body by eating a big more for a couple of days. Any tips on that?

Weight Loss Tip for The Holidays - Smoothies
We are right smack in the middle of that season between Thanksgiving and New Years where parties are scheduled and the temptation to overeat is everywhere. I thought I’d post one of my own tips for keeping my blood sugar level and avoiding evening snacks (which is my personal weakness). I make a very natural smoothie which has all the goodies, including dairy and fiber which seem to turn the trick to keep me from gaining weight. If I sip one in the evening it keeps me from eating other things I should stay away from, and sometimes I use one in the morning to replace breakfast, and it gives me a high energy start to my day!
Weight Control Smoothie!
You need a blender. Also 1 cup skim milk (or soy milk). 1/3 cup yogurt (plan or flavored), 1 packet stevia sweetener (optional), 2 pieces of cut-up fruit (I usually use a banana for 1, and maybe a pear or apple for the other), 1/2 cup ice, cinammon, and my personal favorite: a dash of vanilla (Optional, but it makes the drink for me!). I also add a teaspoon of flax seeds for some extra fiber kick.
Just toss it all in the blender, making sure you have enough liquid (skim milk) so the blender can process everything. If the smoothe isn’t thick enough, add a little more ice. It usually gives me two servings, so I feel like I am very indulged, but it really is very natural and healthy even with two servings!
I think it is a great treat that takes the edge of sugar cravings, but still makes me feel like I had something really delicious to treat myself too! Be sure and post your own tips in the comments or on the Over 50 chat forum!
This helps me, but if it doesn’t work for you, try a free sample of the 2 Day Diet where you can lose 6 to 12 pounds in 2 days!
