Health Insurance Over Age 50 Or Over Age 60? Impossible? Not Yet!

Can you find individual health insurance over age 50 or over age 60 in the US?

Of course it is tough to find affordable health insurance for many Americans. This is true for people of many ages. Otherwise, with rising health care costs, we would not see almost 50 million uninsured Americans!

In addition to the 47 million uninsured Americans, I would bet that at least twice that number are not very well insured to make certain that their health and pocketbooks are well protected. I have heard so many horror stories of mini-med plans that top out at very low amounts which will not cover any sort of serious injury or illness.

The Uninsured Problem Is Acute For People Over 50

From my own experience working with insurance, I know that the situation is particularly difficult to obtain health insurance over 50, 55 or 60! Of course, Medicare should kick in at age 65, but what about adequate health cover until them? If a 55 year old is having trouble affording health insurance, the 10 year wait until Medicare can seem like a long time.

Where Baby Boomers Can Look For Health Insurance

The best you can do is to compare health insurance plans and quotes, and then if you still have a problem obtaining affordable, or any, health coverage:

  • If you have been declined by a private insurer because of a pee-existing health problem, consult with your state insurance department for high risk health insurance options.  Here is a list of high risk health plans by state. There is also information on that page about the new national high risk health pool.
  • If you can find employment that offers group health benefits, this may be a great choice! If you get hired by a company that offers a group major medical plan, they must accept you. You may still have to pay some portion of the premiums though.
  • HSA (Health Savings Account) plans with fairly high deductibles, but with health savings accounts that earn interest and tax breaks, are good bets for middle aged people. The money can be used for all sorts of medical services, even some that are not covered by most medical plans, and any unused money can be withdrawn at retirement (Medicare) age! Many people can deduct qualified contributions and premium payments from their income taxes. This reduces the “real” cost of the plan too.
  • If you still cannot qualify for a medical plan or if you just cannot afford the premiums, consider some low income options. These could include Medicaid, a county hospital system health plan, or a foundation with funds to help people with a particular disease or health problem.
  • PPARX.org is a good online resource which may help you connect with the right program. It is the Partnership for Prescription Assistance, but also provides information to help you find help for other types of medical services.

Here are some good online health insurance resources:

Individual Health Insurance Quotes – BBB Approved Online Health Insurance Quote Form. This is a quick way to find competitive medical plans and prices in your area. The quotes are free, and you are not every under any obligation to purchase anything.

Unemployment Health Insurance Alternatives - What to do for a medical plan if you are unemployed. Consider private companies, plus government options.

Group Health vs. Individual For Small Business - Should your small business get a group medical plan, or will individual health insurance serve you just as well? If you are a small business owner, or self-employed, will a group plan help you?

Compare HSA, PPO, and HMO Medical Plans – Compare and Contrast the most popular types of major medical plans. It will help you figure out which plan is best if you understand how they work!

US Discount Dental  Programs – You can find a zip code search for Dental Discount Plans for routine services, cosmetic dentistry, crowns, orthodontic, dentures, and more. If you do, or do not, have dental insurance, these networks of cheap dentists may help.

Mini Med Insurance - It may be easier to qualify for a mini-med plan then a major medical plan, but will it provide good coverage for you? Understand why they types of medical plans have easier underwriting or possibly, lower rates, before you decide to sign up.

And if you are of Medicare age, you may want to compare Medicare Health Insurance Plans. Those pages also provide a basic overview of the Medicare health system, including basic coverage, supplements, MA plans, and prescription plans.

Dawn – I believe the federal government is coming up with a plan for people who need private insurance. It won’t be free but it should accept everybody (I hope). Also note that female health insurance rates tend to be higher than male rates – funny because life insurance is usually lower for women. I guess women tend to spend more on health and live longer? True?
