It seems that we Americans do not like to discuss death, and the associated unpleasant duty of sending our loved ones off to their final rest in this sphere. And it seems clumsy and awkward to discuss the costs associated with funerals. However, the average US funeral costs over $8,000 as far as I can deduce from the sparse information that is published, and it seems very easy for funerals to cost from $10,000 to $20,000 or more! It seems to me that we all need some sort of plan in place to have access to this sort of cash. Nobody needs to add the stress of coming up with several grand added to an already miserable time when a loved one passes on!

I found a discussion on the average funeral costs. I talks about the lack of tools to “shop” funerals the way we might shop for similarly priced items like cars or air conditioners. It also mentions that the funeral industry may, at times, use this reluctance by funeral buyers to treat this as a commercial transaction to their advantage, and so many consumers are oversold. And also, the article has some simple tips to save hundreds of dollars without reducing the quality or dignity of a loved ones funeral.
Almost all of us have had some experience with funeral planning. Was there an experience you’d like to report, either positive or negative? Did a member of the clergy help you, or did you have a cash reservce, final expense plan, or pre-need plan in place to ease money worries? Let us know in the comments!

[...] It seems that we Americans do not like to discuss death, and the associated unpleasant duty of sending our loved ones off to their final rest in this sphere. How Much Do Funerals Cost Anyway? [...]
My family and I recently had to plan for our mother’s funeral. Unfortunately she did not plan anything or have insurance. The cost was $13,000.00 and Her headstone was an additional $3,000.00. The cost has fallen on myself and my siblings. Death is never something we want to plan for, but I do recommend insurance coverage so those left behind do not have to bear these costs. It is hard enough to lose a loved one, and then to be straddled with an enormous price tag.
