Can You Find Help Resolving Insurance Complaints?

Insurance Claim Complaints

If you are talking about health insurance or car insurance, this industry is one of the most tightly regulated industries in the nation. Most of the regulation is done, however, at the state level. Each state has its own department of insurance. Some laws are at the national level too.

I found this article – How To Resolve Insurance Complaints – and thought it would be a good topic to write about today! It gives some common steps to take to get the fastest resolution possible.

1. Talk to your own insurer and make sure you understand why they made the decision you disagree with. Sometimes these decisions are in error. Other times an adjuster has some flexibility, and a polite phone call may get a decision changed to your satisfaction. This is actually quite common. Sometimes a simple phone call can help. I have actually resolved a couple of problems with auto insurance and health insurance by calling. Once it was a coding error that got fixed, and the other time I got an adjuster to be a bit more generous with their settlement.

2. Talk to your state insurance department. Each state has a department, with a website and toll free phone numbers. They exist to protect consumers and you should take advantage of them! Here is a list of US State Insurance Departments.

3.  If you are still unsatisfied, it may be time to find an insurance lawyer. They will usually provide a free initital consultation for you. They may also work on a contigency basis which means you only pay if they win. A visit with a lawyer may be in order if nothing else works.

Have you had success battling an insurer over a claim? We’d be happy to publish your comments for our readers.
