You Probably Remember When Most Coins Were Really Silver
We are pretty used to thinking of our pocket change as mere tokens, which work in machines to pay tolls or buy a soft drink. However, most of us can probably remember when the change in our pocket was actually made from a precious metal. In fact, silver dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars were 90% silver until 1964. Even from 1965 until 1970, half dollars were still 40% silver. After that, the value of the silver, made it to expensive to use it in common pocket change. Starting in 1965, a silver dime, only looked silver!
If you ever collected old coins, you may be very interested to learn about the value of silver in pocket change. Now it is very rare, these days, to actually find silver coins in circulation, though a lot of people still search bank rolls and do report they still find it once in awhile. People seem to have the best luck searching half dollar rolls for silver, perhaps because silver was in half dollars longer, and so more was in circulation.
If you do have a stash of old US silver coins, or are just interested in learning more about the subject, we have found an interesting resource. Here is a US silver coin calculator that gives you the silver bullion value in some common US silver coins. Even if it is hard to actually find US silver coins in your pocket change, you can still find it at flea markets, online auctions, or estate sales. The page mentioned above will give you an idea of the worth of these coins.
Even if you do not get into the hobby of collecting silver, you may just take a trip down memory lane. Remember when the dime in your pocket was a bit thinner, really shone like silver, and could actually buy something really great like a comic book? I do! I remember going to the corner drugstore with my mother, and asking her to spend some pocket change on the latest issue of Superman or Archie. She’d let me, and I was probably more pleased with this ten cent purchase then most other purchases I’ve made in my life.
