Make Retirement Saving Fun

goldcoins.jpgFor some of us, retirement invesement is not dull at all! Oh we may be conservative with the bulk of our retirement funds, but then again, if we are still earning a decent income, we may be prone to make a hobby out of our retirement investing. And you know, like anything else we do, if we invest with passion it just tends to invoke the good karma and we do better!

For instance, I inherited a passion for coin collecting from my dad. So part of my savings is in the form of collectable coins and bullion. Now, I don’t have a king’s ransome there, but I do have a collection which has appreciated over time, and which I have acquired on what I consider a series of well researched good buys. It is possible for me to indulge in a profitable hobby because I enjoy the pastime, and it connects me a bit with my late father.

Others like the excitement of forex and currency trading. They love to watch currency news and get a kick out of betting on the rise and fall of the world’s money. To be good at it, you need to commit to keep up with events, and with the potential for making a fortune comes substantial risk. I have not ventured into this arena because I don’t have the time to learn about it, and for a person like me without the knowledge, it would be much riskier than collecting coins.

See, even though any investment is risky, the knowledge and passion we have, reduces the odds of “bad luck.” I can still lose money on a coin deal, but it is unlikely that I will lose money over time. Also, I invest what I can afford to lose, and so if my collection takes a temporary dip, I am not in a hurry to bail out. Over time, I can usually find an opportunity to catch up.

Do you have a passion or hobby that also makes some money you can save for retirement? Or let’s put that question another way. Could you? Discuss!
