Which Is The Best Kind of Health Insurance?
The whole subject of health insurance can get very confusing. Not only do you have to choice a kind of health insurance, but you may also be able to select deductible levels, copays, prescription benefits, etc. And let me start of my writing that I cannot make any blanket statements about one particular kind of health insurance being best for everybody. It would be impossible. For one thing, most insurance is regulated at the state level, and plans and premiums will vary by your own location. Rates can vary from one zip code to another, and so can the plans that are on the market.
This is all true if you are purchasing a major medical plan for yourself and your family, or if you are selecting a Medicare health plan.
So how can we pick the best health insurance plan for ourselves?
- Understand the types of major medical plans. In other words, be able to understand the general differences between PPO, HSA, and HMO health plans. This article can help: Compare PPO vs HSA vs HMO Health Plans. If you are on Medicare, look here: Compare Medicare Health Plans. You will be able to get a general idea about how common major medical plans work and start thinking about which ones would work out for you.
- Find out which plans are on the market in your area. This will affect your choice too, of course. You will also want to compare health insurance quotes because, for most of us, the price matters! Keep in mind that you may be able to adjust some things, like your yearly deductible, copays, etc. to change the price too. The quote form we have linked in this section will return competitive plans and premiums from competitive insurers in your area, so it can be very handy. It is also free.
- Decide which plan will work out best for your family. For example, you may live in an area with a very large HMO network. The simplicity of managed care could be very convenient. On the other hand, you may prefer more flexibility in choosing doctors and other medical service providers. In this case, a PPO may be better. If you like to control your own health costs, and can be a disciplined saver, consider HSA health plans.
- Get Help From Qualified Insurance Agents If You Need It. After you have a good idea about how types of health plans work, and also an idea of how much plans cost, you can consult with a qualified local insurance agent. I don’t suggest doing this first because some agents are very motivated to push specific plans or companies. Even if they are not, and really can provide a variety of health insurance depending upon their specific customers, they will be better able to serve you if you already have an idea about the type of coverage that would work for your family.
