Well, its that time of year again, and qualified individuals are learning about all of the latest and greatest retirement health plans. These come in several flavors like different Medicare Supplement levels, and of course, the many Medicare Advantage plans which can be PFFS, HMO health plans, or PPO health plans. We leave it to other sites to explain which is the best HMO or PPO, but what we want to do now is complain about something else!
Dental Care After Retirement?
You know, improved dental care during our whole lives means that many of us are not toothless old hags at all! We still need to care for our teeth, or our dentures, or our crowns, or whatever. What I do see, is that most of the retirement health plans lack dental care, and the few that have any, have very limited coverage.

And yet, retirement age is when many of us really start needing more expensive services to preserve the pearly whites. Crowns and dentures are expensive dental services for everybody, costing in the thousands, and we really need some way to plan for these expenses. Of course, thisproblem of dental benefits is not limited to retirement, and I think this post on dental plans for unemployment is also helpful to retired people! Note: The last statistic I saw couted about 100 million people who lacked dental benefits in the US, which is twice the number who lacked health benefits. (Note: unemployment health plans really do not apply to retired people as much)
So low cost dental discount plans can provide some relief, granting access to a network of dentists who are willing to abide by the cost cutting measures of a major network in exchange for a steady stream of clients, much like the advantages of an HMO.
