Are You Neglecting Your Hearing Loss?

You may be surprised to note that hearing loss is the 3rd most common chronic health condition among Americans, after arthritis and high blood pressure. And yet,  average people who suffer a hearing loss, will wait for 5 years before seeking help. While these people may feel as if their hearing loss is something they can live with, their are consequences to ignoring this condition.

The Longer You Wait to Treat Hearing Loss, the Worse It Gets

Auditory Deprivation – The portion of your brain that processes auditory information can become less efficient if it is not used.  But if you use a hearing aid, like Miracle Ear now, you can keep your the auditory center of your brain active and functioning properly.

Social and Economic Consequences- The effects may be subtle, but hearing loss can affect your relationships, mood, and it can even affect your ability to make a living. This reduces the quality of your life, and it may even hurt your bank balance!

Emotional – The actual emotional impact of hearing loss have been documented. From Hearing Loss Facts, we find:

There is also considerable evidence, much of it archived at The Better Hearing Institute (BHI) website, suggesting that patients with untreated hearing loss suffer more from depression and social isolation compared to those of similar age who wear hearing aids. Patients with hearing loss are more likely to be depressed and suffer from the many quality of life effects of it, than patients of similar hearing loss that have chosen to wear hearing instruments.

Why is Hearing Loss an Acute Problem For Baby Boomers?

We are, along with other things, an electronic generation. We started out, in our teens, with rock and roll blasting at concerts, stereos, and radios. Now we have probably graduated to iPods. This, combined with the normal progression of aging, has made this problem even more common than it has been in the past.

This is not to say that future generations will not suffer. In fact, 15% of college graduates have been tested to have more hearing loss than their baby boomer parents!

One Response to Hearing Loss – A Growing Problem With Baby Boomers

We all know first hand the challenges of those with poor hearing. But what I hear from everyone who goes the hearing aid route is a general unhappiness. No matter what the quality of the hearing aid, everyone complains about excess background noise causing problems. They say the only true way to “hear” someone in a social setting is to be face-to-face with them when talking. Cars are the worst because everyone is facing forward. If someone could create a better hearing aid, I bet we would have a lot more takers out there!
