Over 65 Gambling Addiction Study
We have a request from a reseacher named Connie who is conducting a study on gambling addiction. This is an educational study that will be used to develop theories about gambling addiction which could help people in the future. Please do not contact us about this study, but use the information below.
Update: This is really for our readers from Austraila, and is based in Melbourne, Victoria.
From Connie:
If anyone is happy to be involved in this study, they can either ring me at 0412 848 958, or email me at ctir@unimelb.edu.au (NB: They do not have to provide me with their real names – just real phone numbers!) As a token of appreciation for their time, each participant will be given a $20 Coles/Myer gift card.
Due to the sensitivity of this topic, participants have the option of being interviewed in the privacy of their own homes. The total time taken is 60-90 minutes, & the interview ends with a short demographic questionnaire. Privacy & confidentiality is taken very seriously & I respect what participants prefer to keep “off the record”. The interview will be audio-taped as I need to trascribe the conversation afterwards so that I can read the document over & over again in order to uncover themes & find patterns across the different stories. This process is necessary for theory-building. Each participant will be provided with a copy of the transcribed material so that they’ll know what’s been transcribed. Each person has the freedom to go about telling their story whichever way they prefer to. My role is mainly there to listen, clarify themes & meanings, & develop analytical concepts from their stories for the purpose of building a theory from the data.

A lot of seniors get into gambling, especially going to the casinos because it’s a place that they can go and know they will have company. There are a lot of lonely people that just want to be around others. It’s always wise to take with you only the amount of money that you can afford to lose. It is also a good idea to take lots of breaks and walk around as too many people just sit pumping money into the machines without realizing what they are doing.
