Dr. Mao of Yahoo Health says that our bodies were designed to last until 100. He says that we just need to get our own bad habits out of the way. While I think his view may be a little optimistic in this present day, I also believe we should consider some of his tips for a healthier lifestyle that can add years to our life.

- Replace 3 larger meals a day with 5 smaller meals. Our culture is set up around 3 meals a day, but this is not hardwired into our genetic program. Actually, many people have 3 meals and 2 snacks, so maybe they are hearing their body requesting a more frequent, but lighter load, on their digestion and metabolism.
- Look for opportunities to exercise. Dr. Mao suggests taking the stairs, but I would also add a walk around a grocery store, raking the leaves instead of getting a lawn guy to do it, or even just attacking one room and cleaning it well will help. You’ll feel good about getting a task done, and your body will have benefited from activity without you having to visit the gym.
- Find reasons to be joyful. As a reward for raking the yard, take a couple hours to sit down with a funny movie or get togeether with friends to share funny stories. Laughter releases endorphins, and also laughter has been shown to release stress which also helps us live longer.
- Drink lots of water – Many long lived people, from around the world, share water as their secret to a long life. They have access to pure water, and they make sure they keep their bodies hydrated.
- Meditate – Again stress is an early ager and a killer. Find a comfortable chair, relax, and allow your mind to go blank for a few minutes. Every time thoughts pop into your head, slide them out again. Let your mind and your whole body to calm down.
I think these habits will help most of us lead happier and longer lives. Do you have any secret fountains of youth you would like to share?
