Health Benefits of Common Aspirin

aspirinHas your doctor told you to take a low dose aspirin every day? Many of us are advised to add a simple “baby” aspirin to our daily diet in order to reduce the risk of heart disease and other problems. Can a simple and old fashioned remedy like a baby aspirin save our lives?

Should Everybody Take a Daily Aspirin?

In light of mounting evidence that show that a daily aspriin might be effective in reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, colon cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease, should everybody take one? Well, the thing about aspirin is that since it has been around so long, it is one of the most studied medicines on the market, it is cheap, and it is easy to buy at a drug store, convenience store, or almost anywhere. But some people cannot tolerate this therapy because of other side effects.

Some People Should Not Take Aspirin

But some people cannot take aspirin, and others may be able to take an aspirin once in awhile, but cannot take daily aspirins. Even a baby aspirin can have dangerous side effects, so we are cautioned to consult our doctors before starting a daily aspirin therapy.  It may also be more dangerous if you are taking other medications. Please ask your doctor about low dose aspirin therapy!

You can get more information about the risks vs. benefits of starting a daily therapy by taking to your doctor. You can also read this article from the University of Michigan Health System. The article discusses the exciting new research on heart attack, stroke, and other disease prevention, but it also lays out the risks.  For instance, the blood thinning properties may save lives. But it can also increase the risk of internal bleeding which can be very dangerous.

Potential Health Benefits of Aspirin Therapy

  • Aspirin’s action as a blood thinner helps save many lives. It makes blood cells less “sticky”, and so it helps keep blood clots from forming. In clinical studies it has been proven to lower the risk of death from heart attacks, strokes, and related disease. Even if a person is having a heart attack a stroke, an aspirin can help reduce the severity of the attack.
  • There is evidence that this old fashioned wonder drug helps slow the progression of colon cancer. Some studies suggest that aspirin may even prevent some cancers from ever forming.
  • Some studies have demonstrated that a pill a day will also slow or prevent dementia, like Alzheimer’s disease.
  • The best news is that these studies also suggest that most people will enjoy these benefits from a very low dose. The 81 mg. “baby” aspirin is fine. Since our risk of having negative side effects increases with the dose, save the large pills (325 mg.) for a major headache. The smaller pills, sold for daily aspirin therapy, are fine.
