What Is Medical Massage?

First, you must understand that medical massage is similar, but a bit different, than the type of massage you schedule at a day spa for relaxation and general relief. For one thing, a medical doctor will prescribe medical massage therapy. It is targeted towards the relief or healing of a particular ill. So a visit to a medical therapist will probably not include a whole body massage, but it will include working the particular part of the body that needs relief from chronic pain or other ills. This is not always true, but it is a general expectation to have.

Massage therapy has become a mainstream practice, and doctors are beginning to prescribe it more often. It is generally associated with relief from chronic pain or injuries. Here are some of the ills that may get a massage prescription!

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • Pain associated with “slipped disks” in the back.
  • Pain associated with injuries.
  • Edema and Constipation
  • Fibromyalgia

Though massage is often associated with the relief of muscle or joint pain, some people contend it can help the body heal other diseases too. And that is the real point of medical massage. It does not heal, but helps the bodies natural ability to heal itself work more efficiently. But that seems to be the point of most medicine anyway.

Does Health Insurance Cover Medical Massage?

Your major medical plan could even cover this therapy when practiced by an approved therapist. Before you seek therapy, it is a good idea to make sure how this will be handled ahead of time. It would be a good idea to check with your insurer and your therapist to make sure they will work together. If you have a network plan, like a PPO or HMO, they may have a list of network therapists you can use.
