Can Sulfates in Shampoo Actually Cause Hair Loss?

If you have ever actually taken the time, and a magnifying glass, to read the ingredients on your shampoo, you probably noticed Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) on the label. This ingredient has been used in hair care products for 50 years, and I am not claiming that one shampoo will make your hair fall out. That said, a lot of evidence is coming together that sulfates can aggravate hair loss or hair thinning, especially in people who are prone to have problems anyway.

Lab Studies of Sulfates

Scientists at the American College of Toxicology used rats in experiements. They did not overdo it, but used formulas that actually contained less sulfate than common commercial hair products. They noticed irritation, inflamation, and yes – fur loss – in some of the rats.

Rats are not people, though some people are rats. But still, these are the same findings that many people report. They feel as if their scalp itches, and they believe a lot more hair is coming out than is normal. It is normal for all of us to lose some hair every day, but it should be replaced by new growth. When scalps are irritated or inflamed, the new growth does not seem to be replacing the lost hair.

Are You Losing Hair?

If you are worried about lost or thinning hair, it would not hurt to try a sulfate free shampoo for awhile. You can also find sulfate free shampoo, conditioner, and skin cream! This is similar to people who think they may have an allergy to a certain food trying to see if symptoms disappear if they leave that food item off the menu for a few days.

Again, some people are just prone to losing hair as they age. This is true of male pattern baldness and of women with thinning hair. However, some chemicals may aggravate the problem. Or they may cause hair thinning in people who may be sensitive to some chemicals but would not otherwise suffer much hair loss. But if you are worried about it, why not make a simple and inexpensive switch to see if it helps?
