Medicare vs Health Reform?

If there is one US institution that is sacred with US seniors, it is Medicare. Medicare is the public health insurance option for American senior citizens and disabled people. If you are not familiar with Medicare, you can get a quick primer here: Compare Medicare Health Insurance.

Is Medicare Health Insurance Radical?

But it may surprise you to know that the beginning of this public health option were very hotly debated across all segments of society in the early 1960’s. And now, 50 years later, it is just part of the fabric of America. I wonder if some of they pundits on Fox News have gone back and look at some newspaper articles from the very late 1950’s or early 1960’s.

Health Insurance Reform Myths

I am not that big of a fan of AARP, because I find them a big marketing wing for insurance companies rather than the special interest group for the over 50 set they claim to be. But to my pleasant surprise, they have been very supportive of the idea that health care change has got to come! And why not? Even Wal-mart and many other large businesses support government reform.

It did not take a lot of Googling to find an AARP article on health reform myths and facts. Look at what AARP has to say.

Fact: None of the health care reform proposals being considered by Congress would cut Medicare benefits or increase your out-of-pocket costs for Medicare services.

Fact: Health care reform will lower prescription drug costs for people in the Medicare Part D coverage gap or “doughnut hole” so they can get better afford the drugs they need.

Fact: Health care reform will protect seniors’ access to their doctors and reduce the cost of preventive services so patients stay healthier.

Fact: Health care reform will reduce costly, preventable hospital readmissions, saving patients and Medicare money.

Fact: Rather than weaken Medicare, health care reform will strengthen the financial status of the Medicare program.

Bottom Line: For people in Medicare, health care reform is about lowering prescription drug costs for people in the “doughnut hole”, keeping the doctor of your choice, improving the quality of care, and eliminating billions in waste that is causing poor care and medical errors.

The aim of health care reform is not to hurt seniors, but to help everybody. Seniors are important, but so are middle aged people, young adults, and children. We need to move together if we want to move ahead.
Personally, I believe it would be better to move ahead and stages. For intance, maybe we should address the issues of uninsurables, and then see how many uninsured people are left. We could attack a problem at a time. But that is a moderate stance, and apparently it is getting drowned out in the firefight between the convervatives and liberals.
But don’t get me wrong. I do believe it is time for health care reform, and as a self-employed person, I struggle with rising premiums and costs like many others do.

Money is The Only Thing

But as a business person, I do understand that the big issue here is money. This is a tough problem when many (most?) families generate more in health insurance premiums than they pay in taxes!
As a very smart person I know said, “The only real issue here is money.”
