If you are a new home owners, you may benefit from these ideas for protecting your home investment. Even if you have owned your home for a long time, or have owned several houses, you may want to refresh your memory on some homeowners basics!
Energy Saving
- Make sure your air conditioning filters are clean. I am not a professional, but have been told that it is fine to use cheaper filters as long as you change them often. In fact, it may be better to use cheaper filters as long as you make sure they are changed frequently! You can even buy packs of them at the hardware store so you always have some on hand. This helps protect your expensive investment in a heating and cooling system, and should also reduce energy costs.
- Plug drafts. Do you feel hot (or cold) air coming in from outside. As my own house aged, I could feel it from the back door. It was time to address that. If you have a particular draft or air leak problem, as at the local hardware store. They can tell you how to fix it.
Home Safety
- Make sure all of your alarm systems have good batteries, and that they function properly. This should take you about 5 minutes.
- Make sure you know how to shut off the water and electricity in case you need to. Do you know where your main breaker box and water shut off is?
The Slab
Is a tree starting to damage your slab? It is time to evaluate the value of that tree vs. the value of having a good slab. If yo are having a dry spell, make sure you take the time to water because very dry soil can also cause problems with your home foundation.
