Not Ready For Retirement?

Take a look at some good options for retirement jobs and career changes.

Retierment Jobs And Job Changes

Retirement looks nothing like it did in our parent’s generation. Everything is different now and the notion of retiring in your 50’s even if you can afford not to work another day for the rest of your very long life is boring.

You’re still a strong, vital, alert member of society that has many things to contribute to the working world. Don’t just take your gold watch and head for Florida, you’ll go out of your mind. Think about these other career options for your generation. Maybe re-train for a career shift or work part-time from home.

Flexible Or Fast Career Change Options

• If you want to stay at home or want to have a more location-independent job, try telecommuting so that you can relocate or travel a bit, check out telecommute websites like Flexjobs.com or tjobs.com. This is ideal for you guys out there that have a retiring spouse that wants to finally get out of the city, but you’re not ready stop working.
• Check out the listings at a local university or community college. A degree certificate like Mediation or paralegal or even nurse practitioner depending upon your background might not take too long and could provide some job security along with the excitement of a new career.
• CNN Money has a great article entitled “Best jobs if you’re over 50”. There are certain jobs that the over-50 crowd is very well suited for due to pure life and work place experience. Take bookkeeping for example, if you’re over 50 no matter what you do, you’ve been keeping some form of books for a good long while. Find a class on Quickbooks and check out jobs for entry-level accounting. You’ve crossed a lot of t’s and dotted a lot of i’s in your day, accounting coordinator positions would benefit a great deal from your attention to detail.
• Grant writing could also be another great fit. A lot of the work can be done from home using the work experience you’ve garnered over the years.
• Things are kind of up in the air for teachers in a lot of districts these days, but tutoring is on the rise. Several private tutoring companies all over the United States are looking for quality, part-time help.

Though the younger crowd may be coming in a gobbling up a lot of jobs, they are new to the game and there are a lot of jobs that must be done by people with life experience. Freelancing isn’t the most secure of jobs and requires a great deal of personal marketing to establish a real income, but think about the connections you already have and take advantage of every possible avenue. Have the retirement you want, but not before you’re ready. Be ready to step into a new field and show everyone what experience you can bring to the table.

I just turned 53, right now I am free lance writer and I must agree that this is not a stable job as compared to like when you work in an office. One good thing I did before retiring from my work is I was able to save up for retirement. I like the idea of enrolling for Mediation or paralegal or nurse practitioner though. Like what they say, it’s better late than never.
