What is a Kindle?

A Kindle is the electronic e-book (and magazine) reader that is being marketed by Amazon. No, I don’t have my own yet, but I’ve used a friend’s. I also have it on my wish list of things to buy, or that my friends and readers could send me.  I think it would be the greatest luxury to be able to order up almost any book or publication I want to with a couple of button clicks.

Note that I tried to convince the Admin here to let me put up an Amazon wish list button so my dear readers could contribute to my “buy a Kindle” fund, but she refused. She said, “If anybody wants a Kindle, it’s me!”

Will Kindle Kill Books?

I do get pleasure from combing through libraries and book stores, but sometimes I just want to read without having to make a trip. And other times, a trip to a library or bookstore would just be very inconvenient, and it would be fantastic to be able to use one device to access almost anything I would care to read. There is also a browsing feature, so you can get some of the joy of just looking through the stacks.

Note: Get more information, read reviews, or buy a Kindle Book Reader at Amazon.

Kindle Book Reader Highlights

  • The display is very similar to reading an actual book. This means you can even read it outside without worrying about glare. This was one of the main things that impressed my friend because she likes to take it to the beach. c
  • You can connect wirelessly. So you will be able to download your materials at the beach, in a waiting room, on the road, etc.
  • Hundreds of thousands of choices, including many new books, are online this way.
  • You can look through free samples to make sure you really want to get the whole book.
  • While you have to invest in the price of the Kindle, downloaded books are much cheaper than print ones. If you’ve ever agonized over buying a new book in hardcover, you will have the option to read your favorite author’s new book right away in Kindle form.
  • There are lots of free Kindle books too. Other suppliers have also started publishing Kindle compatible books that are free or cheap.
  • The Kindle is pretty green. The electronic reader should save its share of trees from being chopped down to make new books. It also has boosted the battery life in some models, but not all.  But many users say that just reading a book, with the wireless off, requires very little energy. They can use the reading features for weeks without a recharge.
  • You can also read Kindle books on your PC. If you are home, you could read on your desktop or laptop. But you probably don’t want to get sand in that expesive notebook, so use the Kindle on trips. If you want something to take on an airplaine, a Kindle is much more convenient too. This is especially true these days, with all of the restrictions on carry on bags.

This is one guy’s opinion, and I’d like to know what any Kindle owners think! So go ahead and register for free so you can comment.

Just a note to add… The link in the post goes to the top of the line Kindle, but you can find less expensive ones on the Amazon website. You may also find deals somewhere else, but Amazon seems to list new and used ones.
