<p>Stomach trouble is one the most frequent reasons people go to see their doctors. Almost everyone&#8217;s diet these days contains processed food and with the current economic situation more people are becoming stressed out. Though antibiotics are great for many kinds of infections they can make our bodies more susceptible to the bad bacteria that cause stomach ulcers because they destroy the good bacteria.</p>
<p><strong>Traditional Ulcer Treatment</strong></p>
<p>There are all kinds of traditional medicines out there to cure ulcers. Though many people seem to have limited success with what conventional medicine has to offer. I originally went to my doctor and took all the drugs he prescribed and took all the tests he ordered but nothing seem to help. I have always been open to trying natural cures. In searching on the internet for home remedies for stomach ulcers, I found a variety of suggestions. I was very pleased with the results of the natural cures I tried and many participants in the forums seem to agree with me. There were many different cures that were suggested. Here are the ones I found that worked for me.</p>
<p> <strong>Alternative Ulcer Treatments</strong></p>
<p>The juice from cabbage juice is often mentioned as a natural remedy for stomach ulcers. Many people think of cabbage as vegetable that causes your system to create gas. If you examine cabbage a little closer you will find it has an amino acid called L-Glutamine. L-Glutamine function is to improve the cells lining the esophagus and stomach so they can become more resilient. Taking L-glutamine capsules is much easier than boiling cabbage into juice and is as effective as consuming cabbage juice.</p>
<p>When you think of Aloe Vera juice you usually think about as a cure for a burn or a sun burn. Actually though aloe Vera will help with stomach problems also. When my doctor (who uses natural cures and conventional ones) first told me about it, I had never heard of it before as something you drink. Health food stores carry Aloe juice and if your grocery store has a health food section, they may have it too. Now I always keep a supply of aloe Vera juice at home and when my stomach hurts for any reason, I drink some. The dosage is about two ounces of the juice each day. Aloe Vera juice is also anti bacterial, antifungal, anti viral and also an anti inflammatory agent.</p>
<p>Cayenne pepper is so also an excellent natural remedy for stomach ulcers. Again, like cabbage juice it seems a most unlikely candidate for soothing the stomach. When you consume cayenne you mouth often feels like it is on fire. Many people though swear by this remedy. You can make a solution of cayenne pepper and water you can also take it as a pill&#8230; I found cayenne listed as a cure on many websites and also was advised by several owners of health food stores. Capsaicin is the ingredient that gives peppers their heat. I have to say I had a bit of a hot feeling in my stomach when I took the cayenne pill but it didn&#8217;t hurt. Cayenne pepper also has anesthetic properties and therefore may keep you from feeling the pain. Reducing ulcer related bleeding is another property of capsaicin.</p>
<p>Conventional medicine offers antacids and natural medicine offers herbs that bring down the level of acid in your stomach. Licorice, chamomile, cinnamon, marshmallow, slippery elm, calendula and agrimony are one that is usually recommended. I have always been a huge fan of chamomile for an upset stomach and also used it in the beginning to try to reduce ulcer pain. Chamomile has antispasmodic properties, meaning it helps relax muscle contractions, especially in the smooth muscles that make up the intestines. However, as with many natural remedies there is a caution. People who have been prescribed blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin, heparin, Plavix, Ticlid or Trental should consult their doctor before use. Chamomile will interact with these drugs.</p>

I was lucky enough to get a copy of Prime Time Health. I have to admit that when I first pulled this thick book out of the mailbox, I groaned a little. Oh no, I thought, not another really big book to review when I have so many projects going on at the same time. But I sat down on a lazy Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and this book, and I surprised myself because I read it for hours. (Don&#8217;t worry, the book says moderate coffee drinking is fine as long as we take in enough calcium!)</p>
<p><strong>Summary of Prime Time Health By Dr. William Sears (MD) and Martha Sears (RN)</strong></p>
<p>I do not really believe that I read anything about <em>what</em> we should do to prevent medical problems in middle age and beyond that I hadn&#8217;t already come accross from previous research on anti aging and natural health. But this particular book explains what we should do, and how we should do it in a simple and concrete way that I had never seen before. In addition, Prime Time Health really explains <em>why we should make our health a hobby</em> in a clear way I had never understood before!</p>
<p>Yes, we all know that we should avoid bad fats, eat good carbs, and exercise more. But I think that it is much more motivating when understand (even in a simplified way) some of the science and research behind it. I was particularly interested in a study of Eskimos vs Danes. The Eskimos actually consumed more cholesterol in their diets, but also consumed more Omega-3 oils. They had a dramatically lower rate of heart disease. So what I understood from that is healthy eating is not all about avoiding certain foods, but it is more about making sure we consume the right foods. </p>
<h3>The Eat More Fish and Exercise Book</h3>
<p>I was tempted to call this the<strong><em> Eat More Fish and Excercise Book</em></strong>. But Prime Time Health also points out that when we just have to endulge in bad fats, like steak, to moderate our consumption, and to make sure we also eat some good food along with it. For example, if you have to go out for a steak, try to order the smaller portion, and also make sure you start off with a nice salad, and if possible, substitute fruit or vegetables for fries or a loaded baked potato. </p>
<p>Some health benefits from following Dr. Sear&#8217;s program will be welcome by most of us who are worrying about our health in middle age. </p>

<li>Disease Prevention</li>
<li>Younger Brains</li>
<li>Better Eyesight</li>
<li>Younger Looking Skin</li>
<li>Better Moods</li>
<li>Fitter Bodies</li>
</ul>
<p>Is this common sense? Sure, but I think it is ok to be reminded. And this would make a great gift for anybody in middle age or retirement age who really hasn&#8217;t researched healthy lifestyle choices because it presents information in a clear and convincing manner. I think this book would make a great birthday present for a friend who was turning 50, 65, or 80!</p>

<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-239" src="http://www.over50web.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/happysun.jpg" alt="" width="138" height="138" />Sometimes it seems like a low energy level and trouble with moods are considered a natural part of aging, especially with women. But it may not just be your age that&#8217;s got you down. It may be the lack of some things you used to get when you were younger that are slowing you up while taking you down. Here are some common sense things to try to get back in the groove!</p>
<p><strong>Exercise</strong>- You don&#8217;t have to start playing competitive tennis or warm up for marathons. A short walk around the block or 20 minutes on that exercise bicycle you have buried under a pile of clothes may be enough perk you up. You may also give yourself the benefit of added <a href="http://www.over50web.net/health-beauty/vitamin-d-deficiency-symptoms-may-be-subtle/">sunlight and vitamin D</a> which may be lacking, and that lack can affect your mood.</p>
<p><strong>Sleep</strong>- Lots of us do not allow ourselves to get enough sleep. Force yourself to get to bed on time. Treat yourself to a nap if you can. You may be surprised by how much an extra 20 minutes of sleep a day will benefit you.  You can become sleep deprived, over time, by skipping a very short amount of sleep time. Symptoms may be sublte, but as we all know,  feeling cranky is a big clue that you could use more time with the Sandman.</p>
<p><strong>Natural Sleep Aids</strong> &#8211; Are you having trouble getting to sleep? I have discovered <em>Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Extra Tea.</em>It contains chamomile tea, and a bit of Valerian. It is a natural, gentle relaxer and sleep aid. A cup before bedtime helps me get to sleep, and I find I do not wake up in the middle of the night as much either.  The only problem I have with it is the taste, but a drop of honey really helps.</p>
<p><strong>St. John&#8217;s Wort</strong>- This herb is sold over the counter in the US, and has been demonstrated to reduce mild to moderate depression symptoms significantly. This is widely used in Europe, but is gaining more acceptance in the US medical community.</p>
<p><strong>Vitamins</strong> &#8211; We already mentioned vitamin D and sunlight. But other vitamin deficits can have an affect on mental health too. Consider adding a vitamin supplement to your daily diet or going to a doctor for a blood test.</p>
<p><strong>Have Fun</strong> </p>
<p> What activities have you given up as you got older?</p>
<p>Were you an avid cyclist or golfer? Why did you stop? Maybe it&#8217;s time to get out on the street again eve if you do not try to meet goals you did when you were 25.  I know I could not keep up with a cycling club I used to ride with as a young adult, but I asked around and found another cycling club for people over 50!</p>
<p><strong>Go Social!</strong></p>
<p>Also consider other activities. You could join a group to play cards or bunko, or you can start a neighborhood book club. Consider getting out to go to plays or movies, even if you go by yourself. These social activities will engage you, and they will give you something else to look forward to.</p>
<p>If you cannot find a group, look at <a href="http://www.meetup.com/">Meetup.com</a>. It is a website which will allow you to search for many different groups in your local area. You can find groups for just about anything you can think of from movie clubs to professional associations.</p>
<p><strong>Help Others</strong></p>
<p>A great activity that can combine some social time with good deeds is volunteering for a local charity. Different types of organizations  from food banks to pet shelters posts their needs for extra help from time to time. If you cannot commit to a firm schedule, you could also help by raising funds or collecting donations when you do have time.</p>
<p><strong>Give Yourself a Break</strong></p>
<p>Try to forgive yourself for things that did not run as smoothly as you had planned. No matter how well we plan, and no matter how great our intentions are, things go wrong for everybody. Part of life is learning to let go and move on. Millions of people have learned to move past ex-spouses who were jerks, kids who did not grow up to be rocket scientists, and our own failures to become millionaires at 40. Many of us (the author included) had to start over at an age when we thought everything would be settled.</p>
<p>Life is a river, and we cannot totally control where the current takes us. We can try to control how we react to it. And if we don&#8217;t react very well, which sometimes we don&#8217;t, we can try to put that down to experience for the next rough rapids we come to.</p>
<p><strong>Call Somebody</strong></p>
<p><strong>Buddies &#8211; </strong>Call or email a friend. Just chat or make a lunch date. If you don&#8217;t feel like calling, consider joining a social network like Facebook. This is an easy way to stay in contact with old friends and new ones, and it is also a great way to connect with new people.</p>
<p><strong>Therapists</strong>- If you really feel down, it may be time to ask for help from a professional. If you are concered about the price, many therapists have graded scales. Just look online or in the phone book for names in your area and look for somebody who can help you. Sometimes just a few chats with an objective and helpful counseler can get you back on track, especially if you bad mood is caused by a situation you do not feel like you can control.</p>

<p>Well most of us find that our skin is harder to keep up after 50. We may suffer from dry skin, or it may go the other way, and we find more blemished. If you are like me, you can have both problems on different parts of your body!A good moisture lotion can help a lot, and it certainly feels good to apply it. But most natural remedy experts believe that the problems showing on the outside reflect, in part, what is going on inside too. So go ahead and slap on the cream, but also consider these other tips for beautiful skin at any age. This does apply to both men and women.</p>
<p><strong>Rev Up Your Digestion </strong></p>
<p>I know that my own hardy digestion system is not as forgiving at 50 as it was at 30. It is odd too because I can still tolerate spicy food (thankfully!), but some common food, like potatos, seem to be giving me gas these days. But maybe it isn&#8217;t just the food, but a symptom of other problems.</p>
<ul>
<li>Skin problems can reflect a lack of good internal bacteria, constipation, or other problems. Make sure you eat plenty of fiber in your diet. Most of us have to work to get enough with today&#8217;s processed diets. Most us us only eat about 12 grams a day, but the RDA is 2 &#8211; 3 times that much!</li>
<li>Drink lots of water so your body is not pulling water from your skins to keep up basic functions.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Improve Circulation</strong></p>
<p>Make sure your body is moving stuff around faster, something it had an easier time doing when you were younger. Of course, exercise is good. But a massage or a nice shower can help too. A walk every day, or even a few minutes of stretching exercises, can really help!</p>
<p><strong>Avoid Too Much Sugar</strong></p>
<p>Sugar filled treats should be something you allow yourself once in awhile, but not a 3 times a day habit. Try to replace candy bars with apples. You&#8217;ll still have something sweet to eat, but will also be doing your body a favor in so many ways.</p>
<p><strong>Eat Good Fats</strong></p>
<p>Our bodies need fat to function. But scientists and natural remedy experts agree that some fats are better than others. Flax seed, walnut oil, cold water fish, or fish oil supplements are great ways to give your body some of the grease it needs to function properly. This should improve your overall skin tone too.</p>
<p><strong>Look Good from the Inside Out!</strong></p>
<p>Most of us think about changing our diets so we can fit into smaller clothers. But some changes can also impact the way the skin around your body appears. Positive changes on the outside start on the inside too!</p>
