Who Doesn’t Love to Cruise?
If there is one thing that the over 50 set loves to crow about, it is about cruise experiences. Who doesn’t like the idea of embarking on an exciting adventure, and also getting treated like a king or queen while doing it? Cruises are popular for vacations, but they can be expensive if you have a tight budget. Howevr, we have some tips so you can find cheap cruise deals.
Compare the price of a Cruise vs. a Hotel Vacation
When you really consider the cost of a normal vacation which must include a hotel, meals, and entertainment, a cruise can actually stand alone as a good value. If you spend $150 night for a hotel room, and $100 a day for food, plus another $100 for show tickets, you have already started to stack up some bills.
The price of a cruise, where your cabin, meals, and some entertainent comes with the package, may not look so steep now.
Tips For Cheaper Cruises
Cruise Specialists – You may think it will cost more, but sometimes a travel agent who specializes in cruises, can actually come up with some great deals. They know how to travel off-peak, get last minute rooms, and find some fire sales. In addition, they should also be able to help you avoid a nightmare. After all, some deals that seem to good to be true, just might be.
Find Last Minute Deals – If you can be flexible, you can often find sharp discounts because ships need to fill empty cabins. You may find these through the actual line’s website, or through a travel professional.

Repositioning Cruises – Again, this may require some flexibility, but can offer you a great bargain. Sometimes the lines need to move ships from one location to another. Many lines still want to fill up these rides, even though they are really scheduled just to move the ship. These may be longer cruises than scheduled trips, and may require one way travel on an airplane.
Freighter Cruises – If you want to cruise to spend time at sea, and for the opportunity to visit exotic ports, you may reallly enjoy a low cost freighter cruise. You’ll be fed, but probably won’t have a choice of exotic buffets. You may also have to entertain yourself. But some people really enjoy “stowing aboard” a freighter for an inexpensive way to sail away.
Form a Group – If you can put together a group of your friends, coworkers, or religious group, you may be able to find great discounts too.
Consider Travel Cost to Destinations – Some places are just cheaper to travel to than others, and this also impacts cruise rates. For instance, many European cities are very expensive, while some destinations in Mexico are cheaper.
All Aboard!
I would suggest doing some shopping for your perfect ship and line. You can consult cruise agents. You can also search online. Many websites specialize in competitive rates, or you can also look at the official cruise line websites. Some ports also keep information online.
You can find a wonderful way to sail off into the sunset at a price that compares very well to other types of vacations.

I live in Vancouver BC. From my window I see the cruise ships passing under the Lions Gate Bridge on their way to Alaska. It is such a popular cruise, people come from all over for this experience.
If you take this cruise try to take at least a few extra days to spend around Vancouver, it is really beautiful.
